“This contains the orders and the necessary information for you and your…” the colonel coughed, “soldiers.”

He wanted to say men, but the word just felt wrong and his brain failed to translate his thoughts into action. The project had been going on for almost thirty years now, but the colonel still wasn’t used to that idea. He had never even wanted any part in that, but orders were orders and safety and duty always had to come first.

Ella grabbed the container and opened it: nineteen white pills and a black one looked at her from the inside. She took the black pill, swallowed it, sealed the lid and put it in the bag hanging from her belt. She closed her eyes for a few seconds, while her body transformed the information contained in the pill into readable data.

Avrebbe voluto dire uomini, ma la parola gli pareva sbagliata e il suo cervello non era riuscito a tradurre i pensieri in azioni. Il progetto era ormai in corso da quasi trent’anni, tuttavia il colonnello non si era ancora abituato all’idea. Non aveva mai voluto farne parte, però gli ordini erano ordini, sicurezza e dovere avevano sempre la precedenza.

Ella prese la scatoletta e l’aprì: diciannove pillole bianche e una nera la occhieggiavano dall’interno. Prese quella scura, la inghiottì, serrò il contenitore e lo ripose nella borsa che aveva alla cintura. Chiuse gli occhi per qualche secondo, mentre il suo corpo trasformava le informazioni contenute nella pillola in dati leggibili.

Er hatte Männer sagen wollen, aber das Wort fühlte sich einfach falsch an, und sein Gehirn weigerte sich, seine Gedanken in die Tat umzusetzen. Das Projekt lief nun schon fast dreißig Jahre, aber der Colonel hatte sich immer noch nicht an die Idee gewöhnt. Er hatte sich auch nie daran beteiligen wollen, aber Befehl war Befehl, und Sicherheit und Pflicht kamen stets an erster Stelle.

Ella nahm den Behälter und öffnete ihn: Neunzehn weiße Pillen und eine schwarze blickten aus dem Inneren auf sie zurück. Sie nahm die schwarze Pille, schluckte sie, schloss den Deckel und verstaute den Behälter in einer Tasche, die an ihrem Gürtel hing. Sie schloss ihre Augen für ein paar Sekunden, während ihr Körper die in der Pille enthaltenen Informationen in lesbare Daten umsetzte.

Il voulait dire hommes, mais le mot sonnait faux et son cerveau ne parvint pas à transformer sa pensée en acte. Ce projet se poursuivait depuis pratiquement trente ans maintenant, mais le colonel ne s’y était toujours pas fait. Il n’avait jamais voulu prendre part à cela, mais les ordres étaient les ordres et le devoir devait toujours primer sur tout le reste.

Ella prit la boîte et l’ouvrit : dix-neuf pilules blanches et une noire l’y attendaient. Elle prit la pilule noire, l’avala, puis referma le couvercle et rangea le reste de la boîte dans le sac qui pendait de sa ceinture.

Elle ferma les yeux pendant quelques secondes, pendant que son corps transformait les informations en données lisibles.

«Estão aqui as ordens e as informações necessárias para si e para os seus…», tossiu um pouco, «soldados».

Queria dizer a palavra homens, mas, como a palavra lhe parecia errada, o cérebro recusou-se a traduzir o seu pensamento. Há quase trinta anos que o projeto estava em execução, mas o coronel ainda não se tinha habituado à ideia. Na verdade, nunca teve vontade de fazer parte dele, mas ordens eram ordens, e a segurança e o dever estavam sempre acima de tudo.  

Ella pegou na caixa e abriu-a; lá dentro, dezanove pílulas brancas e uma preta olhavam para ela. Pegou na pílula preta, engoliu-a, fechou a tampa e guardou a caixa numa bolsa que pendia do cinto. Fechou os olhos por uns segundos enquanto o seu corpo transformava a informação contida na pílula em dados legíveis.
