In tanti mi chiedete dove trovi l'ispirazione. Bene, scovo idee ovunque, ma oggi voglio parlare dei documentari.

Ne guardo tanti, quasi ogni giorno; seguo il National Geographic, History Channel, il Discovery Channel e svariati canali di YouTube. Non importa davvero se il documentario parli di scienza, natura, storia, cospirazioni, persone o animali... li amo tutti!

Tuttavia, i miei preferiti in assoluto sono quelli italiani prodotti da Piero e Alberto Angela. Sono cresciuta insieme a loro e continuano a offrire una grande varietà di materiale della migliore qualità con diversi programmi:

- SuperQuark 

- Ulisse il piacere della scoperta 

- Passaggio a Nord-Ovest

Oggi ho guardato una puntata sul deserto. La fascinazione per il deserto non è una novità nella mia vita. L'ho visto di persona in Egitto, navigando attraverso il Canale di Suez, in Oman e negli Emirati Arabi, dove ho anche assistito a una tempesta di sabbia. Già a quel tempo avevo un'idea per due romanzi (non parte di una serie) dove il deserto doveva avere un ruolo importante.

Un romanzo era una specie di fantasy storico, con fatti veri riguardo la Turchia, pirati e atmosfere tipicamente arabeggianti e orientali. L'altro era un fantasy epico con una popolazione nomade di guerrieri, magia e tanti spargimenti di sangue.

Ho dovuto mettere entrambi in stand by:

1) perché stavo (e sto tutt'ora) scrivendo altre storie che semplicemente sono arrivate prima... sì, Kara Schwert, sto parlando di te e della tua serie!

2) L'anno scorso ho finalmente letto "Dune", è un vero capolavoro e sento che ogni cosa che venga dopo "Dune", con il coinvolgimento di un deserto, semplicemente non sia abbastanza profonda.

Comunque... questo documentario ha risvegliato la nostalgia per le mie storie del deserto. Vivono ancora dentro di me e rappresentano un obiettivo concreto.

Ecco, è così che mi viene l'ispirazione, almeno uno dei modi. È facile come stare sdraiati sul divano con un bicchiere di vino! Ok, anche il tè funziona, ma il vino è la mia debolezza!

So many of you ask me how I get inspired. Well, I find ideas everywhere, but today I want to talk about documentaries. 

I watch a lot of them, almost every day; I follow the National Geographic, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel and random YouTube channels. It doesn't really matter if the documentary is about science, nature, history, conspiracy, people or animals... I just love them all!

However, my absolute favorite documentaries are the Italian ones produced by Piero and Alberto Angela. I grew up with them and they still offer a great variety of top quality material with different programs:

Today I watched an episode about the desert. The fascination for the desert is not a new entry in my life. I've seen it first hand in Egypt, navigating through the Suez Canal, in Oman and in the United Arab Emirates, where I also experienced a sand storm. Already back then, I had an idea for two novels (not part of a series) where the desert was going to have an important role. 

One novel was a sort of historic fantasy with true facts about Turkey, pirates and typical Arabic and oriental atmospheres. The other one was an epic fantasy with a nomadic population of warriors, magic and lots of blood.

I had to put both in stand by: 

1) because I was (and I still am) writing other stories that simply came first... yes Kara Schwert, I'm talking about you and your series!

2) Last year I finally read "Dune", it's a true masterpiece and I feel that everything that comes after "Dune" with a desert involved is just not deep enough.

Anyway... this documentary has awakened the nostalgia for my desert stories! They still live inside my head and they represent a real goal to me.

So, that's how I get inspired, at least one way. It's as easy as lying on the couch with a glass of wine! Ok, tea works too, but wine is my weakness!
